Life! What For?

“So, What do you think is the purpose of life?”

“Huh” I blurted out. What kind of question was that I thought.

“What do you think you were born for?”

“I am a computer engineer.”

“So, do you think you were born to become an engineer. What I mean to ask is that if you are successful in computer engineering then your life is complete and you are satisfied? Can you spend your life writing programs? ”

“Can’t say that. Engineering is just a way of getting me the knowledge to become successful, earn enough money and have a successful life.”

“So becoming successful is the purpose of your life?”

“Yes definitely.”

“For the purpose of conversation, let me ask you this, If you die after you become successful then you will have no regrets?”

“Hmmm, if you put it that way then no, once my family has that kind of security then, (s you bluntly put) I can die.”

“So you want to live for your family.”

“Yes.”

“Tell me one thing then, when you were born, did you know that you were going to be a computer engineer and then that you will have a family and you have to be successful for you family to be secure after you.”

“No, of course not. They come as you get older.”

“So don’t you think goals or purpose or responsibilities are much better words to explain these things.”

Oh man … me and my big mouth.

“Yes they definitely are better words.”

“So I ask you again, let me rephrase it to you. Do you think there is something you have to do for which you were born. Something that makes your life meaningful. Don’t you think so, that otherwise your life would be like any other individual just born lived and died.?”

(She actually makes sense.)

“So you think that everyone here was born to do something, something with a purpose.”

“Well, Don’t you think so?”

“Well yes… but..”

“So what do you think is your purpose of life? What I’m asking is what is your destiny?” She asked with a smile.

GOD?

“Why?” She asked, “If you don’t mind might I ask you a personal question?” “Yes” I said, “Go ahead.”

“Do you believe in God?”

I became skeptical, as I was expecting something else. “Come on, in this world of today!! Where man is breaking down nuclei to find out what it is made up of and sending up probes to mars to find out if there is life on it. Seventy five years ago Hubble proved that the universes were as a result of the Big Bang and not some divine creation. As an engineer I am afraid my answer to this is a no.”

“So you have no belief in God.”

“I guess not.”

“So you are telling me you have not taken God’s name or rather God has not helped you in any way.”

“Of course what I am today is because of what I have done and not because God had planned it for me.”

“Can I ask you something else? Have you ever done something unbelievable which you thought you would never be able to do or have you ever seen somebody do anything unbelievable?”

“Like in the movies??”

“No not like in movies, Most of them are setup or special effects. More like in reality shows, where people perform unbelievable stunts.”

“Hmm well I am a fan of reality shows and the stunts they show on that channel are quite questionable and I always thought how they did it.”

“And what about you, what do you do when you want to get by something, let’s say a deadline.”

“Well I had faith in myself. I said to myself that I could do it and I did it. But it wasn’t like god told me.”

“So you mean to say that a little voice inside you helped you.”

“Well you can put it that way.”

“What do you think that people who do things, think about when they do it.”

“They must be asking God to take care of them when they do things unexplainable.”

“But god is not there right?? So how do they do those things?”

“Well they have faith in god. The GOD they believe in of course.”

“So why do you think GOD is another being or a supernatural entity. Why can’t God be the thought itself. You believe in yourself or your potential to get by things. People believe in God. So do you see something similar.”

“You mean to say that God is faith.”

“Why couldn’t faith be God. Previously when unexplainable things happened people attributed them to be actions of God, and that concept has been passed on from generation to generation, however most of the things are today explainable by science. Still there are some things, like heroic actions of people and origin of thought itself for example, that are unexplainable by science. In those situations the only thing that gets us by is faith, may it be in itself or any other entity or rather God. It’s only a matter a perception that people have. Don’t you think so?”
